The Rare Breed Meat Company is owned and run by father and son Howard and George Blackwell who wanted to see the the very best meat from rare and traditional breeds back on the consumers table.

“We fervently believe in the quality of the meat produced from these animals that have been reared in totally free range environments and fed only on natural foods.”

Our Rare & Traditional Breeds

About Us

The Blackwell family have farmed in North Essex since the 1930s. Howard began rearing turkeys and geese in the early 1980s supplying butchers, and with these contacts then started rearing and fattening Gloucestershire Old Spots and Oxford Sandy and Blacks. This business quickly developed and The Rare Breed Meat Company was created in 1995 adding other premium brands such as Colne Valley and Salt Marsh lambs, free range Blythburgh pigs, traditional breeds of cattle, quality dry cured bacon and hams, free range ducks, venison and game when in season.

Free Range Geese & Bronze Turkeys for Christmas

Producing high quality, free range and ethically reared meat is at the heart of everything we do at Herons Farm.  With over 35 years of experience we rear free range bronze turkeys, a traditional slow-growing breed with enhanced flavour and quality and free range geese.

Our bronze turkeys and geese are free to roam in large grass paddocks all day and are reared to maturity, skilfully hand-finished and ‘game hung’ for 10 – 14 days for a superior bird.
